Riots at detention center in Nauru

A riot broke out at a detention and processing centre on the tiny Pacific island nation of Nauru on Friday (July 19) involving about 150 of the 545 male inmates there, the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Australia has told Reuters. The department released photographs showing the extent of damage left behind in the aftermath of the disturbance on Saturday (July 20). Parts of the accommodation blocks were destroyed and a torched vehicle could be seen in front of one building in the photographs. Eight people have been taken to hospital but are in a stable condition. More than 15,000 asylum seekers have arrived by boat in Australian territory this year. Australia received 12,400 asylum applications between January and May this year, double the number for the same period in 2012. Since 2001, about 1,000 people have died while trying to reach Australia's Indian Ocean territory of Christmas Island on unseaworthy boats. .
