S. Korea sceptical of U.S.-North talks

In a state news broadcast Sunday, North Korea calls for high-level talks with the United States. A day later, South Korea's Unification Minister described potential U.S.-North Korea negotiations as a pipe dream due to the North's refusal to disarm its nuclear programme. "I think it is almost impossible to have talks between North Korea and the United States," said the minister, adding that the South is in discussions with its U.S. partners over the issue. Earlier, the United States said it would only be willing to meet with North leaders if they showed a willingness to scrap nuclear weapons research. Tensions in the Korean Peninsula have been high for months following an unsanctioned Northern nuclear test and the closure of a joint industrial park worth ith $2 billion in trade annually. South Korea is willing to sit down with the North, but was recently rebuffed, yet again, by its isolated neighbour.
