Families protest slaughterhouse fire

Workers' families protested on Tuesday (June 4) outside a poultry slaughterhouse in northeast China where a fire killed over 100 people. As of 2000 local time (1200 GMT) on Monday (June 3), state-run news agency Xinhua reported 120 people were killed and 70 injured as a result of the fire. Men and woman kneeled down in the middle of the road to block cars, while a crowd of over 100 people gathered around them. Another family member screamed at a line of dozens of unarmed SWAT police officers, and then tried to attack officers as women tried to pull him back. The fire broke out just after dawn near Dehui in Jilin province. The provincial government said it sent more than 500 firefighters and more than 270 doctors and nurses to the scene, evacuating 3,000 nearby residents as a precaution. Local police said ammonia gas leaks might have caused the explosions, prompting the evacuation of residents, the China News Service reported.
