China relationship crucial to US: Hagel

(ROUGH CUT ONLY - NO REPORTER NARRATION) U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel on Saturday (June 1) said its relationship with China was "essential" as the country moves ahead with the strategic rebalancing to the Asia Pacific. Speaking at an Asian security summit in Singapore, Hagel noted U.S. concerns about cyber intrusions linked to the Chinese government and military, but underscored his belief that resolving many regional security issues would require closer cooperation between Washington and Beijing. "Building a positive and constructive relationship with China is also an essential part of America's rebalance to Asia. The United States welcomes and supports and prosperous and successful China that contributes to regional and global problem solving. To this end the United States has consistently supported a role for China in regional and global economic and security institutions," he said.
