He was criticized for failing to submit expense reports, not picking up his phone and unsuccessfully executing any "spectacular" attacks. He was also accused of "sneering", "back-biting" and "name calling", and was compare to a "bleeding wound" which could not heal.Belmokhtar broke away from al-Qaeda last October and started his own group. The following January, he carried out the gas plant raid in Algeria.
