Fast & Furious on top, Palme d'Or awarded

The action-packed sixth installment of the "Fast & Furious" film franchise claimed victory at the North American box office for the three-day U.S. Memorial Day weekend on Monday (May 27), and became the biggest opening film in Universal Pictures' history. The Vin Diesel/Dwayne Johnson movie pulled in $120 million in North America and a total of $300 million worldwide. The third and final installment of "The Hangover" came in second with a $52 million domestic haul. And coming in third was the latest Star Trek adventure, which earned $47 million in its third week in theaters. The Cannes Film Festival came to a close over the weekend and French director Abdellafif Kechiche's lesbian love story "La Vie d'Adele" scooped the top honor. The director and the film's two stars Adele Exarchopoulos and Lea Seydoux picked up the Palme d'Or for best picture. In an unusual move, the award was shared between the director and his two lead actresses as they were central to the film's success.
