Baghdad bombings leave path of destruction in the capital

Residents of Baghdad's Hurriya district woke up to scenes of destruction early Tuesday following a wave of bombings in Shi'ite neighbourhoods across the capital. More than 70 people were killed in Monday's blasts, while scores more wounded were taken to hospital. The increase in violence of late has many worried sectarian attacks will only worsen. No group has claimed responsibility for the bombings, however, Sunni militants and al Qaeda forces are known to target Iraq's Shi'ite population. More than a dozen blasts tore into busy markets and shopping areas in the Iraqi capital, including twin bombs that killed 13 in Sadr City. Tensions between Shi'ite leaders and the Sunni Arab minority are at their worst since U.S. troops pulled out in December 2011.
