Cyclone kills at least six in Bangladesh

At least six people have been killed in Bangladesh by a cyclone that battered the coastline on Thursday (May 16). Thousands were forced into emergency shelters as winds of up to 60 miles per hour (100 kilometres per hour) swept in. Cyclone Mahasen was downgraded as it lost strength, but many homes did not escape the onslaught. Thousands of huts were destroyed in the torrential wind and rain, which also caused flooding on the low-lying coastline. Residents on Friday (May 17) came out to assess the damage as the clean-up began. Forecasters say the storm was moving into northeastern India as it lost strength. They say mudslides could still be a danger as heavy rain spreads north.
