Islamists, police clash in Bangladesh

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION Violence erupted in the Bangladeshi capital on Sunday as thousands of hardline Islamists clashed with police as they called for the enactment of a new blasphemy law. Police fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse thousands of protesters who had blocked streets in Dhaka during a rally which had been permitted by the authorities. Supporters of the Hifazat group smashed vehicles during the mayhem, and attacked two television journalists who were covering the blockaded, local media reported. Two motorbikes were set on fire inside the premises of the Baitul Mukarram mosque, local media reported. Media reports said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had rejected the call for a new law saying the current one was adequate.
