Hundreds trapped in floods

State television CCTV said heavy rain hit Guilin City early Tuesday morning, trapping residents, clogging roads, and damaging local infrastructure. CCTV showed footage of rescuers carrying trapped residents from flooded alleyways and rivers. In some areas, flood waters are as high as one meter (3.28 feet), CCTV said. CCTV said that the heavy flooding of Guilin's nearby Lijiang River prompted the local government to halt all navigation on the river's waterways through Wednesday (May 1) despite the three-day Labour Day national holiday which usually sees plenty of traffic.
