The war in Syria comes to suburban Damascus

The war in Syria comes to suburban Damascus as the government targets rebel positions. Syria's uprising is the bloodiest and longest of Arab revolts that erupted more than two years ago. It began with peaceful protests that were met with force and descended into full scale civil war. More footage, which could not be independently verified by Reuters, appears to show a government tank in flames. President Bashar-al Assad's forces appear to have made gains across Syria in recent weeks. They have advanced around Damascus and the border with Lebanon -- areas that help link the capital to coastal provinces dominated by Assad's Alawite minority. The government is pounding rebel strongholds with air power and shelling -- an effort to gain the upper hand in a war that has already killed 70,000 people.
