76 dead in Bangladesh building collapse

A man is rescued from the rubble of what was an eight-story block housing garment factories and a shopping centre in Bangladesh. The block collapsed on Wednesday, killing at least 76 people and injuring hundreds, according to a government official. One fireman told Reuters there were 2,000 people in the building when the upper floors suddenly fell on top of each other. This rescuer said many are still stuck inside structure, desperately in need of help. The complex is about 30 km from the capital. The cause of the collapse is not known yet, but it seems factory owners may have ignored a warning to close down their shops after a crack was detected on Tuesday. Bangladesh has a thriving textiles industry that has been plagued by fires and other accidents for years. In November 2012, a garment factory blaze killed 112 workers in a suburb of the capital Dhaka.
