Israelis mark Memorial Day

Israel comes to a standstill as its citizens mark Memorial Day. The holiday honours soldiers killed in battle, as well as Israeli civilians killed in attacks. President Shimon Peres laid a wreath on Jerusalem's Mount Herzl. And Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the solemn congregation that many had tried to destroy Israel but they would never succeed. The usually busy checkpoint between Bethlehem and Jerusalem was closed as Israel tightened security. More than 22,000 Israelis have died since 1860. The vast majority are soldiers killed since Israel gained statehood in 1948.
