200 homes burn in Myanmar's restive Mandalay

An inferno in Mandalay, Myanmar guts over 200 homes overnight. Officials said one fire broke out around 0200am local time, and took three hours to extinguish. A second blaze started a few hours later but was dealt with in 30 minutes. The houses were mainly built out of wood and bamboo. A Mandalay fire service official said there was an investigation to determine the cause, but government authorities have said they don't suspect arson. Hundreds of residents displaced by the early morning fires sought shelter in nearby monasteries. (SOUNDBITE) (Burmese) LOCAL RESIDENT SAYING: "When we saw the fire we didn't have time to gather anything. By then the fire was already on this side and it spread really quickly." No casualties have been reported so far. Tensions remain high in Myanmar after a bout of sectarian violence between Buddhists and Muslims killed at least 43 people last month.
