Royals in Saudi Arabia

Britain's Prince Charles and his wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, continued their visit to Saudi Arabia on Saturday (March 16) as part of their nine-day tour of the Middle East. The visit came against a backdrop of activists' renewed concern over human rights in the deeply conservative kingdom. Less than a week previously, Saudi Arabia had executed seven men for armed robbery despite an appeal from clemency by United Nations human rights investigators. Amnesty International condemned the killings, saying confessions had been obtained under torture, and called on Prince Charles to raise the issue of human rights during his visit. Camilla met women members of the council during a round of engagements in Riyadh before the couple flew to Jeddah. The duchess was seen on Saudi TV mostly with her head covered in public, in apparent deference to local custom.
