16 hurt in China aquarium burst

Sixteen people were injured by flying shards of acrylic glass up to 15 centimetres thick. Local media reports said none of the fish, turtles or three lemon sharks inside the tank survived. Shanghai safety officials said initial inquiries suggested cold weather was to blame. SOUNDBITE: SHEN WEIZHONG, DEPUTY DIRECTOR OF SHANGHAI'S SAFE PRODUCTION SUPERVISION AND ADMINISTRATION BUREAU, SAYING (Mandarin): "According to experts' preliminary investigation the main cause of the incident is that the material used to make the aquarium ruptured under low temperatures after long-term use." Shoppers, shop workers and mall security staff suffered cuts and bruises. The shopping mall said the two-year-old aquarium had been a popular attraction. It has no plans to replace it.
