Violence marks the day as anti-rape protests continue in New Delhi.

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Anti-rape protesters demand justice for the victim of the recent incident of brutal rape in a moving bus in India's national capital. Hundreds of protesters carried out their rally at famed landmark of India Gate monument in New Delhi while tensions rose with the police holding off the barricades and several incidents of clashes with the security personnel occurred. Police used tear gas shells and resorted to baton charge the surging crowds with an aim to halt their march to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, the President's palace, almost repeating the act that was staged two days ago. About 30 to 35 people, including a few policemen, were being treated at a nearby hospital for injuries, two doctors said. The 23-year-old victim of the Dec. 16 attack, who was beaten, raped for almost an hour and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi, was still in a critical condition on respiratory support but responding to treatment, doctors said. Six men have been arrested for the assault. The protesters, predominantly college students but also housewives and even children, are demanding more steps from the authorities to ensure safety for women and some want the death penalty for the accused.
