South Sudan military admits UN heli attack

PLEASE NOTE: EDIT CONTAINS GRAPHIC IMAGES EDIT CONTAINS CONVERTED 4:3 MATERIAL The United Nations confirms South Sudan's Armed Forces have admitted shooting down one of its helicopters killing four Russian crew on board. SOUNDBITE: EDUARDO DEL BUEY, U.N SPOKESMAN, SAYING (English): "In subsequent communications between the mission and the South Sudanese Armed Forces the SPLA told the mission that it had shot down the helicopter in the Likuangole area in Jonglei state. Initial reports indicate that the U.N. helicopter crashed and burned." South Sudan's awash with rebellions, tribal clashes and arms after decades of civil war. Since it won independence from Sudan last year the government's been struggling to assert control. On Friday U.N. peace-keepers said the situation in the northern town of Mau was calm but unpredictable following a spate of unrest in the region. Thousands of civilians have sought shelter at a U.S. Mission compound as youths wielding sticks, spears and machetes fought with police earlier in the week. The government said the latest clashes erupted after the bodies of six Dinka tribesmen were found in the town. It's believed they were among 28 farmers abducted in retaliation for a previous outbreak of violence when security forces opened fire on a group of protesters.Auteur: reutersTags: attack four down Sudan Armed Chapman reports killing admits crew Gepost: 22 december 2012Beoordeling: 0.0Stemmen: 0]]>
