The reclusive country's state-run television KRT showed video of the rally with leader Kim Jong-un attending, one day ahead of the first anniversary of his father's death. Thousands of leading officials of the party, state and army also attended. On December 17th, 2011, the North's state media announced Kim's death. A state funeral and a commemorative event capped 10 days of mourning and his son, Kim Jong-un, was hailed as the "great successor".
