India executes Mumbai attacker

Nearly four years after gunmen carried out a three-day rampage in Mumbai, and the only surviving militant has now been executed. Mohammad Ajmal Kasab, captured here with an accomplice during the 2008 attack, was hanged on Wednesday (November 21), at a prison in India. In August the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence for Kasab, who was a Pakistani national. It's the first time India has carried out a capital sentence since 2004. SOUNDBITE: INTERIOR MINISTER OF INDIA'S WESTERN MAHARASHTRA STATE, RAOSAHEB RAMRAO PATIL, SAYING (Hindi): "He had filed a mercy plea, which was rejected. Today, at 7:30 a.m, the militant Ajmal Kasab was executed by hanging. This is a fitting tribute to the people who lost their lives in the attack." Over 160 people dead in 2008, when 10 gunmen stormed the financial capital. Kasab was filmed at a Mumbai train station, where nearly 60 people were gunned down. India has accused Pakistan of failing to act against those behind the raids. But Pakistan denies involvement, and says it is prosecuting several suspected militants for their role.
