Superstorm Sandy cuts power to 8.1 million homes

Total darkness in Breezy Point, Queens where a massive fire gutted at least 80 houses in the path of superstorm Sandy. There are grim projections of power and mass transit outages lasting several more days, with more than 8.1 million homes and businesses without power in several U.S. states. New York's LaGuardia Airport serving the nation's busiest airspace, was flooded and remained closed. Surveillance video released by the Metropolitan Transit Authority shows water gushing through the Long Island Railroad tunnel on Monday. Authorities said New York City will likely struggle without subways for days. With six days to go before the November 6 elections, President Barack Obama is pushing federal disaster relief to the most stricken areas. The storm has dampened an unprecedented drive to encourage early voting, raising questions whether some polling stations will be ready to open on Election Day.
