Turkey shells Syrian border town

This is the border between Turkey and Syria. In the distance, smoke billows from the small Syrian town of Haram - a day after Turkey shelled the restive area. It was the latest in a series of border clashes between the two countries. The fighting is a byproduct of Syria's 19-month-old civil war, which is spilling over into neighbouring countries. In an attempt to end the confltict, United Nations envoy Lakhdar Brahimi met with Syria's foreign minister, Walid al-Mouallem, on Saturday. He's attempting to broker a ceasefire between the government of Bashar al-Assad and rebel forces, who control wide swaths of the country. There is hope a deal will be in place by next week - but many question whether that will be possible. An estimated 30,000 people have died since the conflict errupted in March 2011.
