Turkey's show of force along Syria border

ROUGH CUT - NO REPORTER NARRATION STORY: Turkey's Chief of Staff watched tank exercises staged by the army on Tuesday in the southern town of Suruc, where villagers were living under the threat of spillover of violence from across the border. General Necdet Ozel flew by helicopter to several bases in Hatay and Sanliurfa provinces, part of Turkey's 560-mile border with Syria, and inspected military bases in the heavily fortified region. The border region remained calm as Turkey's military maintained a high security presence following several Syrian mortar strikes over the past week. A mortar fired from Syria struck an Akcakale house on Wednesday killing five people, while another landed in the compound of the Turkish Grain Board (TGB) which is several hundred meters from Akcakale on Sunday. There have been six consecutive days of Turkish retaliation against incoming bombardment from northern Syria, where Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces have been battling rebels who control swathes of land close to the Turkish frontier, underlining Ankara's warning that it will respond with force to any violence spilling over into its territory. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has said Turkey does not want war, but warned Syria not to test its resolve. NATO said it had drawn up plans to defend Turkey if necessary should the war in Syria spill over their border again as dozens of people were killed across the Arab nation on Tuesday.
