Turkey takes aim at Syria in latest attack

Artillery fire echoes across the Syria-Turkey border. On Saturday, Turkish forces fired into Syria for a fourth day after another mortar attack -- this time in Turkey's southern region. Two or three mortar rounds landed on Turkish soil in Guvecci. A local here said a lot of shellfire was just missing the border. (SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) UN-NAMED RESIDENT OF GUVECCI, SAYING: "Artillery shells and mortar rounds are hitting around 20 metres from the Turkish border. They are even firing at vehicles that are bringing wounded people here." This is the latest in a series of Turkish retaliatory strikes in the wake of a mortar bombing on Wednesday that killed five Turkish civilians, including children. Residents in eastern city of Akcakale, the site of the deadly shelling, say they are still worried. On Friday, Turkey's Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan warned Syria not to make the "fatal mistake" of escalating the cross-border conflict, but denied the nation was ready for all out war. Syria's bloody civil war has carried on for more than a year and half, with violence spilling across its borders into neighboring Turkey and Jordan.
