Detainees released in Damascus

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: Syrian authorities released 35 detainees at the Damascus police headquarters on Sunday. The released detainees were not thought to have been directly involved in killing any government forces. Syrian authorities release a number of prisoners every few days, a condition which originally formed part of the peace plan outlined by the former peace envoy, Kofi Annan, earlier this year. Annan's plan involves withdrawing heavy weapons and ceasing violence, releasing detainees, letting in foreign humanitarian aid, and allowing people to protest peacefully. The released detainees showed their identity cards to authority officials inside the police station, who took their finger prints before the registration papers were signed. The registration papers apparently contained a declaration which said the detainees would no longer become involved in anti-government activities.
