Clinton meets with Japan PM Noda

ROUGH CUT (NO REPORTER NARRATION) STORY: U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda met on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) Summit in Russia's Pacific port Vladivostok on Saturday. Noda, who had met Clinton in Tokyo during a meeting of major donors for Afghanistan in July, said the talks between two of the closest and most powerful allies were timely due to the recent territorial row between Asian countries involving Japan. Clinton conveyed President Barack Obama's regards to Noda. "We well remember your successful visit to Washington and your meeting with the President Obama earlier in the summer, and he extends his very warmest greetings to you," Clinton said. Japan is locked in a bitter territorial dispute with China over islets in the East China Sea that both countries claim. Tensions over the disputed islands, called Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan, flared in mid-August, when the Japanese coast guard detained Chinese activists who sailed from Hong Kong and landed on one of the island. The dispute between Japan and China coincides with a stand-off between Japan and South Korea over another chain of islands known Dokdo in Korea and Takeshima in Japan after South Korean President Lee Myung-bak visited the islands in August. U.S.-Japan relations, however have also suffered recently from the feud over the U.S. plan to move its marine base on the southern Japanese island of Okinawa. Another U.S. plan to deploy the Osprey to the crowded island of Okinawa have stirred protests there, partly tied to two Osprey crashes this year, in Morocco and Florida. Clinton is set to meet with several APEC member leaders during the summit and is expected to have an informal meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a reception on Saturday evening.Auteur: reutersTags: and Cut Yoshihiko State narration talks Noda Hillary APEC Minister Gepost: 08 september 2012Beoordeling: 0.0Stemmen: 0]]>
