China, US divided but vow goodwill

The U.S.and China vow goodwill after expressing differing views on various global issues during a visit to Beijing by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton Clinton - addressing journalists alongside her Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi - said the US was disappointed with Beijing's stance on the Syrian conflict. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE HILLARY CLINTON: "With respect to Syria it's no secret that we've been disappointed by Russia and China's actions blocking tougher UN Security Council resolutions" The two countries also discussed the various territorial disputes between China and a number of other Asian countries. The U.S. wants a multi-lateral approach to resolving the crisis, but China's Foreign Minister said that Beijing prefers to negotiate separately with each of the Asian claimants and settle the issue through what he called "direct negotiations and friendly consultation." Clinton also used her visit to appeal to China to use its special influence over North Korea to help reign in their nuclear programme.
