Wealth Gap Increasing in Rural China

The gap between the rich and poor in rural China is increasing, according to a report released on Tuesday by Central China Normal University. The Gini index measures the rich-poor gap. The report says the gap in rural China is about 0.39. The higher the number, the greater the inequality, with the danger zone being 0.4 or greater, according to the United Nations. However, the income of rural households is growing, according to a survey conducted by the University's Center for China Rural Studies. The amount of cash income is now up to about $6,000, or 39,000 yuan, up 14 percent from a year earlier. But it’s not that farmers are getting paid more for their crops—most of those contributing to the income growth are migrant workers in big cities, who have left their rural lives behind. The Central China Normal University survey found that 65 percent of rural households got their income through migrant labor, and there is a bigger wealth gap in the west of China, compared to the east.Official data says that there were 253 million migrant workers by the end of 2011, up more than 10 million from a year earlier. The last time China published Gini index data was back in 2000, when it was at 0.412.Auteur: NTDTVTags: ntd ntdtv china rich poor central normal university gini index Gepost: 24 augustus 2012Beoordeling: 0.0Stemmen: 0]]>
