South African miners appear in court amid protests

WARNING - STORY CONTAINS GRAPHIC VIDEO Crowds outside a Pretoria court after the deadliest security incident in South Africa since the end of apartheid. Many here are wives and family members of the 250 miners facing charges after a deadly showdown with police last week. Miners armed with spears and machetes and hanguns were gunned down by police outside a platinum mine northwest of Johannesburg. Forty four people were killed. Many of the women are appealing for leniency for the miners, who are in many cases, their families' sole breadwinners. They miners face charges including murder, attempted murder and assault.
