Forest fires flare up in Canary Island

Forest fires burn through the Canary Islands, destroying land and property. A blaze on La Gomera has flared up again after being contained last week. Thousands have been evacuated from their homes. (SOUNDBITE) (Spanish) ANOTHER UNIDENTIFIED EVACUEE SAYING: "Half of our island (La Gomera) is burnt and I do not yet know how it is going to end." The regional government president says bureaucratic hurdles are delaying aid. (SOUNDBITE (Spanish) PAULINO RIVERO, CANARY ISLAND REGIONAL GOVERNMENT PRESIDENT, SAYING: "We have the will to face this fire but this is not enough because protocol has made it impossible to reach the area until Saturday afternoon. I mean that more than 20 hours have passed without any help." Firefighters are struggling under difficult conditions as high temperatures and the lack of humidity hurt their efforts.
