Fighting leaves Aleppo in ruins

Syrian rebels say they've regained control over parts of Aleppo, after countering a sustained assault by President Bashar al-Assad's forces. They claim army tanks had pulled out of Salaheddine, which is the southern gateway to Syria's most populous city. Pockets of fighting continued across the district, however, which Syrian state media reported had been "cleansed" of rebel fighters. Reuters can't independently verify these amateur videos, however, which have been uploaded to social media websites. The fighting here, which began late in Syria's 17-month-old uprising, has left the streets of Aleppo in ruins. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based opposition watchdog, said more than 170 people had been killed across Syria on Wednesday, including 33 civilians in Aleppo. It put Tuesday's death toll at more than 240 nationwide.
