The journalist and activist Janbolat Mamai was released from police headquarters in the western city of Aktau yesterday after being held for nearly a month in connection with his coverage of last December's labour unrest in the nearby city of Zhanaozen. His release was approved by the judge in charge of the case, who changed his status from “co-defendant” to “witness,” as he did with the theatre director and activist Bolat Atabaev when he freed Atabaev last week (see below).
