Beaten Maldivian MP speaks

Interim chairperson of the Maldivian Democratic Party, Reeko Moosa Manik, spoke from his hospital bed after being beaten. He said he was brutally attacked by the police even after pleading for them to stop. A plain-clothed policeman then hit his head, which caused a two-inch gash. He has no recollection of how he got to the hospital. A day earlier, UN Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs arrived on the holiday island. He urged for all parties to remain calm.
