Warm comfort for stray dogs in Sarajevo

Temperatures plunge in Bosnia as a cold front sweeps across Europe. It is cold comfort for the stray dogs of Sarajevo. But relief is on the way as people responded to appeals to help homeless dogs. (SOUNDBITE) (Bosnian) CELO LAMIJA, RESIDENT OF SARAJEVO, SAYING: "As much as I can, I and some other people bring food and feed them as much as possible, but nobody does anything to remove them from the streets." There are as many as 3,000 dogs living on the streets of Sarajevo. They now have a host of new best friends. (SOUNDBITE) (Bosnian) DINA BISER, RESIDENT OF SARAJEVO, SAYING: "There are really many of them but I think that it would be really bad if we now ignore them and pretend they were not here. We can all spend a little time and money, this can is not that expensive." For years city's authorities have been trying to raise funds to build shelters for these animals. In the meantime they are attending to their business on the streets. A state of emergency has been declared in Bosnia after the cold snap claimed its seventh victim. Weather officials are forecasting more snowstorms on the way. Deborah Lutterbeck, Reuters
