North Korea Issues on Agenda During Japan-China Talks

One of the key issues on the table was dealing with North Korea under its new leadership.Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda met with his Chinese counterpart, Wen Jiabao, on Sunday. It's Noda's first state visit to China since he took office just a few months ago.One of the main topics of discussion: North Korea.[Yoshihiko Noda, Japanese Prime Minister]:"Peace and stability on the Korean peninsula are in the common interest of both Japan and China."Noda is the first regional leader to visit Beijing since Kim Jong-il's death, which left his youngest son Kim Jong-un in charge. The elder Kim's death has caused worries across Asia, with many of North Korea's neighbors fearing nuclear tests and military confrontation.China is North Korea's only major economic and diplomatic partner. Japan and the United States have long pressed Chinese officials to use their influence to rein North Korea in. Restraining North Korea is especially important for Japan, which is within range of the North's missiles.China and Japan also signed agreements on education and clean energy cooperation during the state visit, which wrapped up on Monday.
