Chinese Regime Steps Up Pressure on Power Plants

Three quarters of its electricity comes from coal. The Chinese regime has promised to decrease sulfur dioxide emission, a main byproduct of coal production, by eight percent by 2015. In a recent bid to reign in pollution, the regime is stepping up fines against power plants that violate emission regulations.The Chinese regime is issuing fines against eight coal plants for violating pollution limits.In a statement given on Thursday, the Chinese Ministry of Environmental Protection and National Development and Reform Commission said these power plants are connected to some of China's biggest utility companies.In many cases, the plants being fined are also accused of falsifying emissions data and disabling monitoring equipment.China is facing some of the world's worst air pollution. A primary source of that pollution is coal.China is the world's largest consumer of coal. According to the World Coal Association, it consumes more than double the United States—the second largest coal consumer.But coal is a multi-billion dollar industry. Although the Ministry of Environmental Protection did not say how much these companies are being fined, a report by state-run Xinhua News says the maximum fine would be only over 15-thousand dollars.Chris Chappell
