Un déséquilibre démographique entre les hommes et les femmes en Inde et en Chine est causé principalement par l’avortement de millions de foetus de sexe féminin. Contrairement à la situation dans la plupart des pays du monde, les petites filles sont minoritaires en Inde. On y compte en moyenne 1 000 petits garçons pour 930 petites filles. La raison, selon les experts locaux, est que les familles préfèrent les garçons pour perpétuer le nom familial dans un système patriarcal. En outre, les filles coûtent cher, car la famille doit payer une forte dot au futur mari de leur enfant.
