Joseph Roth fut l'un des écrivains autrichiens les plus importants du XXième siècle. Né en Galicie en 1894, il quitta l'allemagne à l'avènement du IIIième Reich pour venir vivre en France jusqu'à sa mort en 1939. À Paris, il évolua dans les cercles allemands anti-nazis et dénonça le pouvoir hitlérien en entrant dans la Résistance . Il oeuvra pour le retour de la monarchie des Habsbourg, convaincu qu'elle seule serait capable de libérer l'Allemagne d'Hitler.
